Navigational Charts

Charts compiled for navigation display information about water depths, characteristics of the floor of water bodies and coasts, navigational hazards and aids to navigation, etc. Navigational charts cover both sea areas and navigable inland waters.

In Estonia, navigable inland waters are the Narva river, lake Peipsi, lake Lämmijärv, lake Pihkva, the Emajõgi river, lake Võrtsjärv and the Väike-Emajõgi river from Võrtsjärv to Jõgeveste bridge, the Pärnu river from its mouth to the mouth of the Reiu river, the Sauga river from its mouth to the pedestrian bridge of Vana-Pärnu, the Reiu river from its mouth to the railway bridge, the Nasva river from its mouth to latitude 58°13,9’N, the Kasari river from its mouth to Kloostri bridge, the Tuudi river from its mouth to Kirikuküla bridge, the Pirita river from its mouth to latitude 59°27,864’N and the Purtse river from its mouth to latitude 59°26,059’N.

Electronic navigational charts (ENCs) can be purchased as software or together with a chartplotter. ENCs need to be updated from time to time because navigational information is constantly updated.

There are two types of data representation:

  •  electronic navigational charts (ENC) - these are vector charts
  • raster navigational charts (RNC) - these are raster charts
