The Estonian Maritime Administration declared the tender by Insenerehituse AS successful for the maintenance dredging of Rukki kanal (Rukki Channel) on the Rohuküla-Heltermaa fairway between mainland Estonia and Hiiumaa Island. O 3 August 2018, a contract was signed, with the total cost of 650,000 euros, plus VAT 130,000 euros.

The maintenance dredging will be undertaken to restore the depth that was achieved in the channel after the last dredging works, which according to the Baltic height system BHS-77 was 5.4 metres, but in accordance with the currently used common European height system is 5.2 metres (EH2000).

The dredging works are planned to begin on 22 August at the latest and conclude by 15 October 2018, compliant with the permit for the special use of water issued. The activities will be carried out during night hours in order to avoid hindrance to ferry traffic in the area.
