The Maritime Administration of Estonia is a governmental agency operating within the area of government of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, which has a managerial function, exercises state supervision and applies enforcement powers of the state on the bases and to the extent prescribed by the law

The main functions of the Administration are: 

  • exercising state supervision over compliance with the requiremets regulating the activities of the Administration arising from legislation, and applying enforcement powers if necessary;
  • creating conditions for ensuring the safety and security of water traffic in Estonian maritime waters and navigable inland waters;
  • participating in the drafting of legislation related to the activities of the Administration and making proposals for their amendment, including updating the terminology in the Estonian language;
  • participating in the development of policies, strategies and development plans related to the activities of the Administration; participating in the preparation and conducting of projects related to its activities, including international projects.
